Jan. 22-26

Our puppet production is well underway!  We will be finishing them up this week.  Our performance will be this Friday from 12:30-1:30 in the 3rd grade pod!
As for robotics, we will also be starting that this week.  We will be having robotics for 8 weeks starting on January 22.  The class will be only Mondays from 9:40-11:05.  Parents are welcome to help, but she asks that you can commit to more than just a week or two as it takes some time to explain how to help the students and check off missions.

Reading:
We are going to start working on parts of a story this week.  We will also continue to work on finding the moral of the story.  Moral and most important event are things that I would encourage you to continue to work on while reading at home.  While we have switched to fluency reading for homework, it is still important that students are reading and discussing books at home.  When working with kiddos during DRA testing, I noticed that the comprehension piece is the biggest struggling.  We will continue to work on it in class as well!

Writing:
We will be doing a "4 square" writing about weekends this week.  This format helps students focus their writing and add details.

Spelling/Phonics:
We will continue to work on the vowel team spelling and phonics pattern.

Math:
Our focus this week will continue to be counting coins.  Have your child help you count some change this week!

Science:
Body systems will still be the focus this week.  We will dive a little deeper into the respiratory system and then start the circulatory system.

Homework:
Please remember that homework now goes home on Monday and is due the following Monday.  There will no longer be book bags or reading logs, so please just make sure the packet comes to school on Monday in their place. :)

Have a great week!

Jan. 8-12

It's hard to believe that we are back and getting started on the second half of the year already!  We have lots of exciting things coming up in the next few weeks!

We are going to start puppets with Ms. Gwen next week!  There was a flyer that went home about it today.  Please read through it.  We will let you know when our performance is as soon as possible!

We are also starting robotics soon!  We will be having robotics for 8 weeks starting on January 22.  The class will be only Mondays from 9:40-11:05.  Parents are welcome to help, but she asks that you can commit to more than just a week or two as it takes some time to explain.

Reading:
We will continue with moral this week.  Please ask your child about the moral of the story as you read at home! :)

Math:
We are starting telling time to the nearest 5 minutes.  We will also be continuing work with word problems.

Science:
We will start our unit on body systems this week.  Our first body system will be the digestive system.

Homework:
Our monthly homework wasn't as successful as the 2nd grade team had hoped.  We are going to move more towards a weekly packet starting next week.  We will see how that works and make a decision about where we will go with it by the end of the month.

Dec. 11-15

We will be on our regular schedule this week.  We are quickly approaching our winter break, so I know that things can get hectic!  Please make sure that reading logs are still coming on Mondays and that book bags are returned by Thursday so that I can switch them out.

Reading:
Our comprehension focus has been learning how to use text features in non-fiction text.  We will wrap that up this week and start diving into moral.  This one can be a tough one, so please try and ask questions about the moral of the story when you come across one while reading at home.

Writing:
We will be writing holiday letters to work on our letter writing skills this week.

Spelling/Phonics:
Our spelling pattern will be 'oa' and 'ow'.  The spelling patterns have gotten much harder the past few weeks and require practice at home.  Please be sure your child is practicing them!

Math:
We will be continuing our work on graphing this week.  We will also be doing our district math assessment on story problem solving.

Social Studies:
The kiddos will be working on a group presentation about one of the 3 cultures we have been studying.

Nov. 20-24

There will be no early release this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  We will also only have school on Monday and Tuesday.  I hope you all have a fun, family filled Thanksgiving!!
(We won't have book bags this week.😀)
Reading:
We will continue to work on genres this week.  Try asking your child to figure out the genre of their book bag books or any other books that they are reading.

Spelling/Phonics:
We will not have spelling or phonics this week.

Math:
We are well on our way to learning subtraction with borrowing.  Students have been learning not only how to do the algorithm, but also how to draw it out using 100's cubes.  This gives students a deeper understanding of what they are actually doing when they borrow.

Social Studies:
We will wrap up our study Colonists this week and then learn about the Native American and Colonist's first Thanksgiving.

Homework:
We will still have a reading log for this week.  Also, just a reminder that our homework calendars are due next Friday.  Please be sure that your child has completed at least 16 boxes completed (There are a few that they can check off on Thanksgiving! 😊)

Have a great week!

Nov. 13-17

We will be back to our regular schedule this week.  I will be sending home book bags home on Monday along with a reading log.  This month's reading log is about book recommendations.  Your child is to state who they would recommend the book to and why.  Please be sure you are checking over your child's reading log before they bring it back to school.  It should be free of any spelling or punctuation mistakes.

I will also be sending home a book order this week.  This will be the last one before the holidays.
Please let me know if any of the books will be gifts and I can make arrangements for you to pick them up!
Reading:
We will be wrapping up asking questions this week and starting our unit on genres.  Students will be learning how to identify the genres of various books we read.

Spelling/Phonics:
We will start our unit of vowel teams.  This is the idea of two vowels working together to make one vowel sound.

Grammar:
We will continue our focus on verbs.

Math:
This week we will start double/triple digit subtraction with regrouping.  This is a very important part of 2nd grade math.  The concept can take some time for students to truly grasp.  We will start by showing them how to borrow using pictures and base ten blocks.

Social Studies:
We will continue to work on our cultures unit.  We will finish up our study of Native Americans and start our study of Colonists.

Homework:
Please be sure your child is continuing to check off boxes on their homework calendar and turning in their reading log weekly.  They should also be reading their book bag books.  Please be asking them questions about the book they are reading to be sure they are understanding the book.

Thanks for your support!

Oct. 30th- Nov. 3rd

We will be having a busy week this week in 2nd grade!  The usual Halloween Parade will start at 8:15 on Tuesday.  Students may come to school in their costume, but they must have clothes to change into after the parade.  Our class party will also be on Tuesday afternoon.
We will be visiting the book fair on Wednesday.  If you would like to send your child with money for the book fair you may.  I just ask that the money be in a bag with their name on it so that I can collect it and hang onto it until the time of the book fair.

Reading:
We will be working on asking questions as a comprehension skill this week.  This helps students think deeper about their reading.

Grammar:
We will start learning about verbs this week.  Students should already have a foundation in their knowledge of verbs, but we will continue to build on that this month.

Phonics/Spelling:
Silent 'e' will continue to be our focus this week.

Math:
We will continue to work on number strings and adding double digit numbers this week.

Homework:
Our November homework calendar will go home today.  Please be sure to look over it with your child.  Again, this should not be anything they should rush through.  Please pace yourselves to complete at least 16 boxes by the end of the month.
