Sept. 18th-22nd

We have been working on our map skills and various topics pertaining to maps.  We have been also working on our knowledge of our state.  In a few weeks, we will be putting our knowledge to use to create salt dough maps of our state.  We still need a few more volunteers to make salt dough (about 5 more) and then we will also need a few helpers who can come in on the 28th @ 2:15 to help us create these maps.  I will be sending home a recipe this week for those who have offered to make the salt dough.

Reading:
We will be introducing the comprehension strategy of text to self connections this week.  Students build stronger comprehension of a story when they are able to make a personal connection to what they are reading.

Spelling/Phonics:
We will have another list with ending blends this week.  I have added the list to Spelling City.  If students logon, they can play different games using the spelling list that I have added for the week.  https://www.spellingcity.com/jocelyndubs/

Writing/Grammar:
Our focus will continue to be on nouns.

Math:
We will continue with the concept of place value.  We will also be working with situation of the day.

Social Studies:
We will continue to work on maps this week.

Homework:
By now, your child should have at least 8 boxes filled in off of their homework calendar.  Please be sure to help keep them on track for finishing at least 16 of the boxes by the 29th.  Also, please don't forget to be checking their reading logs.  Students should be writing AT LEAST 2 sentences that tell about the setting of the book.  One sentence should talk about the specific place and time of day, the other sentence should tell about the place in time that the story took place (past, present, or future).

Thanks for all your support!  Have a great week!

Sept. 11th-15th

It's time for another week!  This week I will be sending out another book order.  The kids really enjoyed all of the new books that the last order brought to our classroom.  Please remember that you can order books online and are able to purchase from any catalog!

Reading:
This week in reading we will continue to work on beginning, middle and end (this topic takes some time :)).  We will also be working on setting.  As you have probably noticed, setting is also our focus for our reading logs.  We are looking for more than just a place.  We also want to know details like time of day and place in time.

Spelling/Phonics:
We will continue to work on blends this week.

Math:
We will start a focus on one more one less and ten more ten less.  This helps students with their concept of place value.

Social Studies:
Landforms will be our focus this week in social studies.  We will be learning about the 4 main types.

Homework:
Mon- Reading log and Spelling
The rest of the week should just be at least 4 boxes on the homework calendar.  Parents, please be sure that students are doing quality work that is worthy of a signature.  While I love to hear the enthusiasm, I don't want to hear of kids trying to fill in 10 boxes in a night.  The focus should be more on the quality of the work and making sure they are remembering to do their work neatly and correctly.  Thank you for your support!

Sept. 4th-8th

I hope that everyone enjoyed their long weekend! 😊  We will be on our regular schedule for the rest of the week.
**Please see the note about the change in homework.**

Reading:
Our focus this week will continue to be on retelling the beginning, middle and end of a story.  Try doing this at home with your child.  When they read a book at home, ask them to retell the story with as many details as they can.  This skill helps to build their comprehension of stories.

Writing:
We will work on setting up our Writer's Notebooks this week.  Please be sure to send in the items they are going to use to decorate the covers of their notebooks.

Spelling/Phonics:
Blends will continue to be our focus in phonics and spelling.

Math:
We have been working on using our strategies to solve word problems multiple ways.  As we continue to practice, the kids will grow stronger in their ability to independently solve these types of problems.

Social Studies:
We've been learning about different types of maps.  This week we will focus on map grids.  We will also do a shift into learning about our state and some of the state symbols.

**Homework**
This week we are going to switch to a Homework Calendar.  We decided that we wanted to give it a try.  Pretty much everything on the list should be something that your child can do independently.  This being said, they will need you to check their homework and sign off that they have indeed completed the work.  There will be 20 options for them to complete.  They must complete 16 of the choices by the end of the month.  The reading log and spelling will continue in the same fashion that we have already set-up.  The reading log and spelling will go home on Monday and then the reading log will be returned the following Monday.

This week we have Curriculum Night on Tuesday.  It runs from either 6-7 or 7-8.  I would love to see you there!  It is a great time to hear about what goes on in second grade!
I have placed our book order!  It usually takes 7-10 days for it to ship.  I will send the books home with the kids as soon as they arrive.

Reading:
This week we will work on retelling stories.  We practice by writing the events that happen in the beginning, middle, and end of a story.  This helps students with their comprehension and retell skills.

Writing:
We will be introducing "Work on Writing" during Daily 5 time this week.  This gives the students some creative time with their writing.

Math:
We completed our math assessments last week.  I will be going over them this week to check the results.  I will use this information to help decided where each students is as a math learner.

Please be sure to read over the papers that came home in blue binders.  Also, just a reminder that reading logs are due tomorrow.  Please be sure your child has answered the question and that you have looked over their work to help make any needed corrections.

Aug.14th-18th

It was so nice to meet everyone at the open house on Wednesday!  I am looking forward to an awesome year!
I know everyone just finished buying all kinds of school supplies, but I had a few parents mention that they would like to purchase a few things for the class if we needed them.  Since now is "back to school" time many of the items we are still in need of just might be on sale!  Here are just a few things we could use. Thank you!

Card stock (any color)
Sharpies (black)
Water colors (just the small 8 color sets)
Double stick tape
Construction paper (any color)

We will be starting our Daily 5 routine this week.  While many of our students participated in Daily 5 last year, we will go over each routine one at a time.
DIBELS testing will also be completed this week.

Math:
We will continue to review on some of the first grade math concepts while we get to know our students.  We will also be giving the new math test for the start of the year.  This will help us to see what concepts the students have retained from first grade and help to give us an idea of where each child is in math.
